Have you heard the buzz surrounding the many health and beauty benefits of turmeric?
Turmeric: it is often associated with Indian cooking, but there are so many amazing benefits of this anti-inflammatory herb. This beautiful golden herb is, in many ways, similar to its cousin Ginger. There is an active compound in Turmeric called Curcumin, which has been studied extensively for its potent health benefits.
While turmeric and curcumin are often used interchangeably, they are not the same. Turmeric is the lovely yellow powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is the primary constituent of turmeric and it is responsible for providing the many different benefits.
I want to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of “woo.” I like REAL science to back things up. There are many websites out their claiming that herbs, pot, certain essential oils, etc. are CURES for many different things. That bothers me and is dangerous, because it really is fake news. I am not 100% in favor of traditional Western Medicine either. I believe, though, that we can incorporate the best of the East and the West and reap the benefits of both. I like Turmeric because it IS backed by science for so many different things. Let’s look deeper into the health benefits of turmeric curcumin.
I started taking Turmeric Curcumin and Bioperene (more on that later) almost 3 months ago. The effects it has had on my personally are nothing short of remarkable. My friend, Becky, mentioned that she was taking it. My stepmom has been taking it ever since she saw them talking about it on one of her favorite tv shows, which was either The Doctors or Dr. Oz.
I began researching the herb more at length, as my education on this herb was still a bit limited, even though it was mentioned in an herbal medicine course I took online from the University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing. Plus, when it comes to scientific research, knowing the latest studies is so important to me. I spent several weeks reading up on research published in medical journals and from the NIH website. There is sound research out there on Turmeric.
I have had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Tendonitis for years. It affects my right arm and hands beginning at my elbow. It works its way down my arm right to my pinky. At times, the pain is quite bad. I make jewelry, for example, and have been unable to handstamp consistently for months. It affects my daily life — which brings me to the first benefit of Turmeric. If I were still working as a makeup artist, this would put me out of commission for weeks at a time, unless I could effectively use my left hand. It is nothing to take lightly.
Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory benefits.
Studies show that curcumin, the main compound found in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used successfully by many to treat arthritis, bursitis, and osteoarthritis. It may also help reduce discomfort and pain associated with similar conditions.
I have personally noticed an ever so slight difference in my discomfort from Carpal Tunnel and Tendonitis, although the effect is not dramatic. I say this as I type, so I know that I am hindering my own recovery by repetitive use of that area. I write for a living and am not a fan of speech to text software — I am a much better writer when I am sitting in front of my laptop typing my words.
It would be interesting to see how things might improve more if I gave my wrist a rest.
Turmeric benefits the skin.
Yes, turmeric is good for the skin, too. Have you noticed that more and more products are cropping up with skincare, especially when it comes to serums? There is a reason for this. Turmeric Curcumin for Depression and Anxiety
I have battled depression and anxiety for more than half my life. I would say that it goes back to my pre-teen years, actually, although I wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood. I think that the subject of mental health was considered very much taboo. I mean, you just didn’t talk about those things. I began getting counseling when I was a freshman in college. I tried talk therapy and ultimately ended up being prescribed Prozac (fluoxetine), which I took for almost thirteen years straight. I also started suffering from panic attacks after my second child was born.
Prozac likely saved my life — at least my quality of life.
This SSRI drug was not without its side effects, however. While I was researching turmeric curcumin for my Carpal Tunnel, I came across articles about its use for the treatment of depression. I laughed. Turmeric for mental illness? Yes. I read the studies and was very excited to see that there have been several promising studies, including this one.
Now what I am about to share is NOT something I am recommending. PLEASE consult with your physician prior to discontinuing any medication and what I am sharing is MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and is IN NO WAY giving you medical advice.
It came time for me to refill my Prozac and I decided to see what would happen if I stopped taking it and started taking turmeric curcumin instead. I purchased a bottle of Puritan’s Pride 1000 mg and took it twice daily. I later switched to another because the Puritan’s Pride was so large that it was very difficult to swallow. I much prefer swallowing a pill that adding the powder to a drink twice a day simply because of the flavor. I now take the one linked above.
Because absorption is an issue, it is recommended that you take a supplement with Bioperene added, or black pepper extract. Bioperene enhances the absorption of curcumin, so you will want to be sure to find a supplement that includes bioperene.
My personal results: I take 1950 mg per day of Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperene. For ME personally, it is just as effective as my 20mg per day of Prozac. I do not feel any different. Whenever I have stopped taking Prozac in the past, I am a hot mess of ups and downs and panic attacks. For me, this helps my anxiety and depression.
